Question

Find engineering SMEs in the West Midlands that are growing, have won public-sector work and may need additional working capital.

Stage 1 of 5

Understanding the request

The agent breaks the question into the conditions it must satisfy.

  • Geography: West Midlands
  • Sector: engineering
  • Size: SME
  • Growth signal
  • Public contracts
  • Working-capital signal

Each condition maps to one or more DataGardener intelligence layers. Nothing is guessed: if a condition cannot be evidenced, the agent says so.

Question: Find engineering SMEs in the West Midlands that are growing, have won public-sector work and may need additional working capital.

Intent: Geography: West Midlands; Sector: engineering; Size: SME; Growth signal; Public contracts; Working-capital signal.

Tools selected: search_companies, execute_ukgaap_query, search_contracts, execute_query.

Modules queried: Company index (Engineering SIC codes, West Midlands, live, SME size bands: 1,284 candidates); UK GAAP financials (Turnover up over two periods, cash down or trade debtors rising: 216 match); Contract Finder index (Awarded supplier in last 24 months, any buyer: 41 match); Company index (No new charge in 36 months, no insolvency event: 27 shortlisted).

Evidence connected: Turnover growth and debtor build-up from two consecutive filings; Contract award notice with buyer and value; Charge history showing age of last secured facility; Company status, incorporation date and SIC description.

Answer: 27 engineering SMEs in the West Midlands match all four conditions. The strongest signal set combines two years of turnover growth with rising trade debtors, a public-sector award in the last 24 months, and a last registered charge older than three years.

Provenance: Source Companies House filings; Contracts Finder; date Filed accounts to 2025; awards to 2026; module Company, Financial, Procurement, Lending; usage 27 company records.

Suggested next questions: Which of these have a director or PSC change in the last 12 months? / Which lenders hold the existing charges? / Who is the finance contact at the top ten?

Architecture

One MCP endpoint with entitled intelligence modules.

DataGardener MCP is not a collection of disconnected servers. It is a single remote server that exposes 34 task-level tools across twelve intelligence layers. Each customer connection is entitled to the modules in its agreement, and the agent sees one connected system joined on company registration number.

  • Task-level tools

Search tools accept plain parameters such as region, county, industry or value band. Query tools accept full DSL for anything a search cannot express. The agent picks the lightest tool that answers the question.

  • Server-side defaults

Dissolved and dormant companies are excluded by default from company queries unless the user asks for them, so results reflect the live business population.

  • Read only

Every tool reads. The server rejects write operations, so an agent can investigate freely without being able to change anything.

  • Entitled access

Identity travels with the OAuth connection. An agent sees the modules its DataGardener entitlement allows and nothing else.

  • Metered by record

Record-returning tools are metered per company record returned. Describe and count tools are designed to be used freely before an agent commits to a larger pull.

  • Knowledge base first

A built-in knowledge base returns the correct field names, nesting rules and KPI templates, so an agent writes correct queries rather than guessing at a schema.

Platform, API or MCP?

The DataGardener platform is for people working interactively. The Company Data API is for deterministic integrations. DataGardener MCP is for AI agents that decide which tools to call. All three use the same intelligence.

MCP vs API

How it works

A question becomes a plan, the plan becomes tool calls, the tool results become connected evidence, and the evidence becomes an answer with its provenance attached.

Step by step

Security and entitlement

OAuth authorisation, read-only tools, per-connection entitlement, UK data storage, ISO/IEC 27001 and Cyber Essentials certification.

DataGardener MCP: frequently asked questions

Is DataGardener MCP one server or several?

One endpoint. Intelligence modules are entitled per customer behind that endpoint, so an agent sees a single connected system rather than a set of disconnected servers.

Which data is included?

Company identity and status, filed financials across years, directors, persons with significant control, shareholdings, group structures, investors, registered charges and lending signals, risk indicators, UK public-sector contracts and published spend, company-owned land and price-paid property data, business contacts where entitled, local-economy aggregations and international trade data.

How current is the data?

DataGardener states its platform is updated daily. Each record also carries the date of the underlying filing, notice or snapshot so the agent can report freshness per fact.

Can the agent write to DataGardener?

No. All DataGardener MCP tools are read-only and the server rejects write operations.

How is usage measured?

Record-returning tools are metered per company record returned. Describe, count and knowledge-base tools are designed to be used freely so the agent can plan before it pulls records. Commercial terms are agreed per customer.
